About Stein & Day

No. The original Stein & Day was a New York publishing house that operated from 1962 to 1989 and then closed. We are a newer, independent company. We are not run by its founders and we are not a continuation of it. We chose the name because of what it stood for in publishing, and we try to carry that author-first attitude forward.

A service company. You pay us for writing, editing, design, publishing setup and marketing work. In return you keep your rights, your accounts and your royalties. We do not acquire manuscripts or pay advances. How the whole process works is explained step by step on its own page.

Our business address is 7 East 48th Street, New York, NY 10017. remotely via video call, phone, and email, serving authors worldwide

Yes. The free consultation is a short call or email exchange about your book and your goals. You get honest advice on which services fit, a written quote, and no obligation to go ahead.

Quotes and payment

Every book is different, so we quote each project after a conversation. The quote is written, lists exactly what is included and what is not, and does not change unless you change the scope. We do not publish prices, because a single figure would fit some projects and not others.

a deposit on acceptance and milestone payments upon completion of each stage

Our Refund and Cancellation Policy explains what happens if you cancel before work starts, during a project, or if we cannot deliver what we agreed. Please read it before you pay. It is linked at the bottom of every page.

Yes, and we list them up front: proof and author copies from the printer, advertising spend, the illustrator's work on picture books, and any third party services such as photography. These are arranged separately and always shown to you.

Rights and ownership

You do. Copyright in the text stays with you, or is assigned to you when a ghostwritten manuscript is complete. ISBNs and retail accounts are registered in your name. We never take a share of your royalties.

Only with your written permission. If you prefer that nobody knows you worked with us, that is fine with us.

Yes. When a project is complete, you receive every file: the manuscript, the cover, the print-ready interior and the logins to your own accounts.

Timelines and results

It depends on the service and the length of the book. Each service page gives a typical range, for example the timeline for editing a manuscript or for publishing a finished book, and we agree a schedule with you in the quote. We treat timelines as estimates, because feedback, revisions and third parties such as illustrators all affect them.

Nobody can promise that, and we will not. What we can do is make the book as good as it can be, publish it properly and, if you choose marketing, put it in front of the right readers and report honestly on what happens.

No. Paid reviews and manipulated rankings break retailer rules and can get a book removed. We do not offer them, and we suggest being cautious with anyone who does.
